Who's Your Hero?
A mentoring program to encourage girls to understand that they can become the heroes of their own lives.
The goal of the WHO'S YOUR HERO? program is a help girls aged 9 to 11 gain confidence to make positive choices and healthy decisions, and to have fun while exploring ideas. The overall purpose is to help girls avoid some of the difficulties that occur in young lives as result of lack of confidence, attachment to poor role models, influence of some aspect of popular culture and unwise personal relationships.
Session topics in the program include exploration of feelings, analysis if the message embedded in various types of music and in TV and print advertising, nutrition and health, conflict resolution strategies, learning about other cultures and the role of girls and women in those cultures, developing new perspectives and ways of making friends. A special session on the dangers if smoking is offered. In Addition, meaningful service projects are an integral part of the program.
Program sessions meet weekly after school, for periods of up to 10 weeks. Music, art projects , video, games and discussions are included, along with topical presentations and questions/answer activities. Healthy snacks and attendance awards are provided.
